skarlat eller skallat, n. skarlagenrødt Klæde (eng. sharlet, fr. écarlate; Höf. Leb. I,23611a2. 269); kyrtillinn var skorinn afnýju skallati ok allr hlaðbúinn Fm.VI, 35815; þat þykki ok eigi ílla bera,at maðr hafi svart skinn til hosna, enekki önnur klæði, nema skarlat sé Kgs.668; skarlat ok gensk klæði Rb. 49(NL. III, 1266); er hón sá, at klæðihans eru brunnin, þá gaf hón honumvel sex alnar af skarlati SturL. II, 11231.
