staup, n. 1) Fordybning hvori eller hvor- over man er udsat for at falde, naarman skal passere Stedet, hvor den fin-des, Folkespr. staup; (blindir menn) erganga þriflandi um veggi ok drepafótum sínum í hvert staup, er fyrirverðr Barl. 7023. 2) Kar, Drikkebæger (ght. stouf, mlat. staupus Schmeller II,617; jvf steypa dvs. styrte, lade falde, omflydende Sager); þetta staup er meðguðs vilja ok hins heilaga Nicholai svástint ok óvíkjanligt, at - Heilag. II,13111. 3) Klump af støbt Metal; ekvil gefa þér 15 merkr af rauðu gulli íeinu staupi Didr. 29530; fellr ór loptinusem eitt staup eða stykki með undar-ligri fegrð Mar. 95526; Ingvarr ok föru-neyti hans fór til bœlis drekans ok sáuþar mikit gull ok svá heitt sem ný-runnit í afli; síðan hjuggu þeir afstaupinu með bólöxum Ingv. 6 (156a4).
